HISTORY

It was on November 11, 1493 (St Martin’s Day) that Christopher Columbus first saw St Martin, which the Arawak Indians then called Soualiga (Salt Island). The struggle between the French and Dutch settlers resulted in the signing of a treaty dividing the island between France (north) and the Netherlands (south) in 1648. Since that date, and despite occasional attacks by covetous English, the two nations have always cohabited peacefully. St Martin is currently part of the department of Guadeloupe.
The economy of the island, nicknamed the “Friendly Island”, is today mainly focused on tourism.
